The Smolensk region is situated at the junction of the main highways leading from the Centre of Russia to Byelorussia, the Baltic States, the states of Central and Eastern Europe, and from the North-West to the South of Russia. The region borders upon Byelorussia which is of primary importance to the development of its foreign economic relations. The distance from the regional centre to the capital of Russia – the city of Moscow – is 380 km, and to the border with Byelorussia – 60 km.
